The Refugee Crisis and the EU-Turkey Deal: Which role for the EU's Home Affairs Agencies?

Date:
Thu, 19 May 2016
Venue:
Karel Van Miert Building Conference Rooms Rome & Lisbon Pleinlaan 5 1050 Brussels
Type:
SOURCE event
The EU’s home affairs agencies, most notably Frontex, Europol and the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), have moved to the center of the EU’s efforts to deal with the unprecedented rise of migrants entering Europe. They have provided operational support for the EU’s ‘hotspots’ in Greece and Italy and become engaged in the EU’s efforts to dismantle the networks smuggling migrants. These agencies have also a key role in the implementation of the EU-Turkey agreement that aims at ending the irregular migration from Turkey into the EU.

The Policy Forum brings together panelists from the EU’s agencies, the civil society and academia in order to discuss the changing roles of Frontex, Europol and EASO. It will take a look at how the crisis has changed the ways in which these agencies interact and function. It will also discuss the future development of these agencies, notably in view of the reoccurring calls to further enlarge their competences and powers.

  • Florian Trauner, Research Professor, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
  • Kris Pollet, Senior Legal & Policy Officer, European Council on Refugees and Exiles
  • David Reisenzein, Liaison Officer in Brussels, Frontex
